Improvement works scheduled for Old York Road

Wandsworth Council is embarking on major improvements to Old York Road as part of their ‘Decade of Renewal’ programme in the borough.

Works will begin on 16 September, starting at the western end where Old York Road meets the one-way system, and then moving eastward towards the junction with Ferrier Street. The first phase of construction is expected to run through to May 2025, with a pause over the Christmas period from 6 December to 6 January.

Network Rail is also set to deliver significant improvements to Wandsworth Town Station in 2025, including new lifts for accessibility.

Traffic routes during construction will be largely unaffected, including those for delivery vehicles, but outdoor dining areas may need to be temporarily suspended to make way for road resurfacing.

Councillor Jenny Yates, Cabinet Member for Transport, said: “Old York Road is a vital part of Wandsworth’s community and its commercial vitality. This reconstruction will enhance the experience for all who live, work, and visit here, while also integrating sustainable features to ensure the road meets modern standards.

“This reconstruction project represents a significant investment in Wandsworth’s infrastructure, aiming to future-proof Old York Road while preserving its unique character, prioritising pedestrians whilst enabling safe cycling. The council is committed to ensuring that the works are carried out efficiently, with minimal disruption to the day-to-day life of the borough.”
