Great news, Wandsworth! Our friends at All Star Tennis have installed two brand-new padel courts at their space in King George’s Park.
The sport that’s taken social media by storm is growing serious traction in Wandsworth, so we caught up with All Star Tennis’ business manager Elliott Austin to find out more.
Hey Elliott, what exactly is padel?
Padel is an innovative form of tennis mixed with squash. Its fun, inclusive and social nature makes it very enjoyable for all! Normally played in doubles on an enclosed court about a third the size of a tennis court, it emphasises teamwork and strategy over strength and technique, which allows families, friends and groups to enjoy it together.
Is padel it for everyone?
Absolutely! Padel is designed to be accessible to players of all ages and skill levels. The smaller court and underarm serve make it easier to pick up than traditional tennis, so you don’t need to be a pro to enjoy it. Whether you’re young or old, athletic or just starting out, padel offers something for everyone.
How can newbies get involved?
We’re hosting a padel open day on Saturday 7 September, with free play, taster sessions, and fun activities all day, from 9am. Our official opening is at 12pm, and everyone is welcome.
What equipment is needed to play?
No surprise here – a padel bat and balls! Now we know not many players have bats so we have plenty of rentals available at £5 and sell premium padel balls for as cheap as £6 a tube. Clothing wise, just whatever you’d wear to play tennis! If you have specific tennis trainers then that is ideal.
Why has padel taken off so quickly?
Padel tennis is booming worldwide because it’s super easy to learn and play, even for beginners! The fast-paced, yet less physically demanding nature makes it appealing to a wide range of players. Add to that the strategic use of the walls and the dynamic rallies, and you’ve got a sport that’s addictive and endlessly entertaining.
Are you running any special offers to celebrate the launch of your padel courts?
Yes! You can get 50% off, a saving of up to £20, on your first off peak padel court with code PADEL50 at checkout. Valid until the end of September.
Booking is now open. Head to All Star Tennis’ website for more information – http://allstartennis.co.uk/padel
