Ahead of our upcoming fashion show at Southside Shopping Centre for Black History Month, we sat down with ethical fashion designer Fée Uhssi to discuss her sustainable African looks.
Tell us who you are and what you do.
I’m Fée Uhssi, a Wandsworth-based Franco-Nigerian ethical fashion designer, artist, and colour therapist.
I’ve dedicated my career to creating sustainable and versatile fashion pieces inspired by traditional wrapping and draping practices from Africa, Japan, and around the world.
My signature technique, the Art of Fashion Wrapping, allows individuals to create a variety of garments from a single piece of fabric. Inspired by the Art of Fashion Wrapping, my Infénity Collection is a versatile and evolutive line of multi-function, reversible, and convertible garments designed to be worn and used in countless ways.
I have a holistic approach to fashion and I have developed the concept of Fashion Healing, by combining fashion psychology and colour therapy, I aim to create garments that not only look stylish but also promote well-being and sustainability.
How did Art of Fashion Wrapping come about?
My journey into creating the Art of Fashion Wrapping began with a deep appreciation for traditional textiles, especially African fabrics. I was captivated by the beauty, richness, and symbolism woven into these materials. Each piece of fabric felt like a story waiting to be told. Inspired by the versatility of wrapped garments and the potential for self-expression, I began experimenting with different techniques and styles.
This exploration eventually led to the development of the Art of Fashion Wrapping, a technique that celebrates the beauty and artistry of textiles and allows individuals to create unique and personalized garments. By reclaiming ancestral wrapping techniques and bridging tradition with modernity, I aim to honour the rich heritage of textile arts while offering contemporary and sustainable fashion options.
Tell us about your upcoming fashion show for Black History Month at Southside, Wandsworth, on Saturday 26 October.
I’m excited to present a fashion show entitled “Reclaimed” at Southside, Wandsworth, as part of Black History Month. The show will showcase a captivating blend of sustainable fashion, including my signature Art of Fashion Wrapping, my Infénity collection, and a curated collection of vintage and upcycled garments.
This collection is a celebration of African textiles and the significant contribution of African art to modern fashion. By incorporating traditional African patterns and techniques into my designs, I aim to highlight the beauty and richness of African culture while offering contemporary and sustainable fashion options.
I’m eager to share my vision of sustainable and inclusive fashion with the local community.
This year’s theme for Black History Month is ‘Reclaiming Narratives’. What does that mean to you?
As a mixed-race black woman of African descent who grew up in Europe, the theme “Reclaiming Narratives” resonates deeply with me. For me, it’s about celebrating the contributions of African and Black artists, crafters, and makers within the modern fashion landscape. By highlighting the rich heritage and innovative techniques of these individuals, we can challenge stereotypes and create a more inclusive and equitable fashion industry.
This theme is a fitting choice for my collection, which aims to challenge stereotypes and celebrate the diverse experiences and contributions of Black people throughout history. Through my work, I seek to empower individuals and reclaim narratives about beauty, sustainability, equality and empowerment.
